Bottlefeeding in blizzard conditions, especially if the power goes out and roads are impassable, can pose extra risks. If you are breastfeeding, even partially, offer the breast as often as possible and minimize your use of expressed human milk or infant formula.
Cleaning bottles, nipples and pumping equipment when there is no power, water is limited and fuel for boiling water is limited is difficult. When preparing infant formula, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before beginning. If using powdered formula, water should be boiled and then cooled to 70C before mixing with powder. Cool and feed.
If you do not have enough fuel to heat water, mix with room temperature water and feed immediately.

Babies can be fed cool breastmilk or ready to feed infant formula. Small quantities are fastest to warm in warm water or even using an adult’s body heat. See less
